(You may have noticed some new, FABULOUS, chevron curtains in this picture...more on those soon!)
I picked up this lamp on one of my many thrifting trips for $8.08. I couldn't ignore that curvalicious shape! I had seen so many lamp transformations online and I wanted to make a beautiful (and cheap) lamp for my home too. But then the lamp sat in my garage waiting for the right project for almost a year. Here's the dark, dated before.
I followed the usual spray painting steps: tape off non-paint areas, quick degloss, light sanding and then several light coats of Bahama Sea spay paint by Krylon. Unfortunately, things didn't proceed so smoothly from this point on. Once a few coats of paint were on, I could clearly see cracks in the wood that were not obvious before.
Boo!
For some reason, my paint projects always take extra time. (whine, whine) I filled the visible cracks with wood filler and sprayed a few more light coats of Bahama Sea. Then I started to have trouble with the finish crackling and bubbling. I felt like giving up, but I kept at it. Once I re-sanded the wood and reapplied more paint (I went through 1 and a half cans!) I was done. And it turns the delightful results were worth the extra work! What are your secrets for perfect spray painting? Clearly I need your help!
Thanks for visiting!

Love the lamp! Gorgeous color!
ReplyDeleteI just bought a lamp at the Goodwill for $2.98. I can't decide if it's the ugliest thing I've ever seen or if it has awesome potential. For $3 I'm willing to give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the color.
ReplyDelete2 secrets: light coats!!! I am usually impatient. Also, if you get a run just tilt your item the other direction and the run will even itself out.
oh my eyes jumped to those curtains! the lamp is adorable of course, too, but those curtains rock, sarah!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful color. I just picked something similar for our nightstand lamps. I'm not any good at spray painting yet--I even get too impatient to tape things off sometimes!
ReplyDeleteLooks SO much better! Love the color! Really pops! And my painting projects also seem to drag on FOREVER too!
ReplyDeleteThree cheers for impatience! Paint always bubbles on me because my coats are too heavy. I have also heard that Rustoleum bubbles less so I need to switch to that. Adorable lamp though!
ReplyDeleteIt's such a lovely color. I've got a pair of wood lamps that I am just dying to paint, but I do not know what color! So i might steal from you. But thanks for the heads up about cracks. I wouldn't have thought to look for any in the lamps.
ReplyDeleteLooks fabulous, well worth all the hard work. Scarlett x
ReplyDeleteI love the color and it never ceases to amaze me how color can transform a ho-hum piece into something gorgeous...great job!
